(W)rapper
SME Industries, Inc.  Los Angeles, CA Project/Site Tour
Rising 240 feet above grade, impressive steel bands create the exoskeleton for the (W)rapper: an unconventional, 17-story, office tower that has zero interior columns. From first sight, steel bands appear to hang from the building, yet they comprise a significant portion of the seismic-force-resisting system. The (W)rapper stands as the first in a new mindset of creative, high-rise buildings. This is your chance to tour this one-of-a-kind project and hear the story of its creation firsthand from the project team! Space is limited, so register today! All attendees should bring their own boots and masks. There will be a limited supply of hard hats, safety glasses, and safety vests onsite so please bring your own if available. Face shields will be provided onsite for a portion of the tour. Schedule of events: 11:00 am - 11:30 am: Presentation 11:30 am - 12:15 pm: Site Tour 12:15 pm - 1:00 pm: Lunch/Networking

Reimagined in Steel: Charles Library at Temple University
AISC Webinar/Online
The Charles Library showcases impressive open interior spaces and expressive cantilevers over the building’s entrances – made possible by its steel structure and thoughtful detailing. Although steel is the natural choice for the long cantilevers, surprisingly, the rest of the structure was originally envisioned, designed, and bid as a concrete structure. After construction bids came in well over expectations, a major redesign was required at the start of construction, which, among other changes, included pivoting the building’s structure to mostly steel. This webinar will tell the story of how the steel redesign was achieved in mere weeks—rather than months or years—to maintain the project’s schedule, and to allow the building to open as planned for the Fall Semester in 2019.
